Boxing Day double for Danon Platina

Mauritzfontein’s inform stallion Danon Platina struck twice at Hollywoodbets Greyville on Boxing Day. Not only did Danon Platina gelding Top Gun win the first race on Thursday, but Danon Platina son The Mikado ran out a convincing winner of the fourth race on the card.

The Japanese champion also went close to having feature race success at Hollywoodbets Greyville -Danon Platina filly Miss Platina was beaten just two lengths when third in Thursday’s Listed Flamboyant Stakes, with Miss Platina having won two of her three starts prior to Thursday’s race.

Danon Platina’s three-year-old son Top Gun got off the mark when he won Thursday’s www.tabgold.co.za Maiden Plate over 1200 metres. Under Calvin Habib, the Paul Lafferty trained gelding was always going well and he kept galloping out in front to score by nearly a length and a quarter.

Bred by Riehtuiskraal Stud, Top Gun is out of the Count Dubois mare Success Counts. He was a R180 000 purchase from the August Two Year Old Sale of 2023.

Danon Platina is also the sire of The Mikado, with that gelding making a positive impression when victorious in Thursday’s Tabgold Score 8 Middle Stakes over 2300 metres. Trained by Frank Robinson, three-year-old The Mikado picked up the second win of his career with a near two length score on Thursday.

Bred by Wilgerbosdrift & Mauritzfontein, The Mikado is out of the Smart Missile mare Landela.

Japan’s Champion 2YO Colt of 2014, Danon Platina has enjoyed an excellent season in 2024-2025 thus far, with his flagbearers including G2 Mike De Kock Ipi Tombe Challenge winner White Pearl, G3 Cape Classic hero Great Plains and G3 SplashOut Victress Stakes runner up Knockout.
