Fort Wood

Fort Wood, one of South Africa’s most successful sires of the past two decades, has died. The son of Sadler’s Wells was 25 and had been active at Mauritzfontein Stud until his death.

A superbly bred horse, Fort Wood was one of four G1 winners produced by the great broodmare Fall Aspen, a G1 winner who was also the dam of 1995 Preakness Stakes (G1) winner and sire Timber Country.

She also produced the French group winner Colorado Dancer who is the dam of 2000 Dubai World Cup winner and sire, Dubai Millennium

Bred in Kentucky by Hullin Co. NV, Fort Wood lived up to his pedigree on the racetrack, winning three of his six outings in Europe when racing for Sheikh Mohammed. Fort Wood’s victories included a memorable score in the 1993 Grand Prix de Paris, in which the vanquished included multiple G1 winner Bigstone and Siam, who is a full brother to US, French and English champion, Miesque.
