Mauritzfontein’s consistently successful stallion Ideal World, whose progeny include South Africa’s reigning Horse Of The Year Rainbow Bridge, came up with his 28th black type winner on Sunday when his son Donald McDonald captured the Listed Michaelmas Handicap at Hollywoodbets Greyville.
Trained by Gavin Van Zyl, five-year-old Donald McDonald claimed his biggest win to date when landing Sunday’s R100 000 feature.
Under Warren Kennedy, the gelded son of Ideal World kept going gamely in the closing stages of Sunday’s 1900m race to win by a head over nine-year-old veteran Wealthy.
Bred by Wilgerbosdrift & Mauritzfontein, Donald McDonald has now won five of just 11 starts, and is yet to finish further back than fourth.
Out of the Mark Of Esteem mare Ireland, Donald McDonald, a half-brother to retired champion Celtic Sea, was a R425 000 buy from the 2018 National 2YO Sale.
His sire Ideal World had also enjoyed success at Turffontein the day before, where his promising, Wilgerbosdrift & Mauritzfontein daughter Eternity Ring picked up her third career victory when winning over 1450 metres.
Sire of nearly 50 black type horses thus far, Ideal World has five lots on this year’s November Two Year Old Sale.
